And... Back to AI

If you missed the recent seminar hosted by the Digital Care Hub "AI in Care: Its Use and Regulation" in Conversation with CQC you can watch a recording below

AIinCare

Overall Takeaway

The webinar reinforced that CQC is supportive of AI in social care , but only where providers can show it is safe, ethical, transparent and beneficial to people receiving care . CQC is not seeking to approve AI tools; instead, it expects providers to take responsibility for demonstrating good outcomes, managing risks and maintaining human oversight. Collaboration between providers, technology partners, people using services and regulators was identified as essential for the successful adoption of AI in care.

Future Priorities for CQC:

  • Continue engagement with providers.
  • Gather examples of AI being used successfully.
  • Strengthen collaboration with other regulators.
  • Develop approaches for identifying emerging risks.
  • Integrate AI considerations into future assessment frameworks.

For Providers

  • Collect evidence of positive outcomes.
  • Share best practice and lessons learned.
  • Ensure robust governance and consent processes.
  • Engage with regulators to shape future guidance.

AI Myths Vs Facts

AI in social care is often surrounded by misconceptions. Here are some common myths vs facts that can be used in training, presentations, or awareness sessions.

Myth

Fact

AI will replace social care workers.

AI is designed to support professionals, not replace them. Human judgement, empathy, relationship-building, and safeguarding decisions remain essential.

AI can make decisions on its own.

AI can provide recommendations or insights, but accountability for care decisions remains with qualified professionals and organisations.

AI is always accurate.

AI can make mistakes, produce biased results, or misinterpret information. Outputs should always be reviewed by staff.

Using AI means sharing confidential information.

AI can be used safely if organisations follow data protection policies, use approved systems, and avoid entering sensitive personal information into unapproved tools.

AI only benefits large organisations.

AI can help organisations of all sizes by reducing administrative tasks, improving documentation, and supporting staff training.

AI understands people like a human does.

AI processes data and patterns but does not possess empathy, lived experience, or an understanding of emotions in the way humans do.

AI can identify every safeguarding risk.

AI may help highlight potential risks, but it cannot replace professional observation, critical thinking, or safeguarding expertise.

Older adults don't want AI involved in their care.

Many people are open to AI-supported services when they improve independence, safety, and communication, provided there is transparency and choice.

AI is too complicated for care workers to use.

Many AI tools are designed to be user-friendly and can be learned through training and practical experience.

Once AI is implemented, it requires no oversight.

AI systems need ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and governance to ensure they remain safe, fair, and effective.
